why we use application page instead of webparts in sharepoint

Hi Friends,

I want to know clearly about the application page functionality in SharePoint 2010.There is know design view for application page.Can we add design view for application page?here my question is whatever we achieve with application page we can do with visual web parts too and web parts are very user friendly with Design View.Please explain difference between site pages and application pages .
