End user “likeability” and “wow” factor in SharePoint 2010

Running a SP Standard 2010 and I just departed from a meeting where the director asked for some more “wow” effect/factors for the End user in the SharePoint as he thinks SharePoint is quite boring and dull in its user interfaces. (it's all static pages and document upload...)

I asked him to give me some examples of these wow factors, he mentioned it could be a process diagram where the End User can click on a specific section in the diagram, and it then dynamically changes showing another part in a long process maybe with a document “attached” to that section…and further on - click on another section and it then changes again....

The organisation browser (silverlight) falls in to the "wow" category as well according to him..

I told him that such "wow" factors would require custom development…(find some cash, dude) and some wow factors can be made out of the box on the enterprise edition with e.g. performance point, dashboards, power pivot, power view etc. etc.

But maybe there's  some "wow" factors in a standard SharePoint, that I haven’t found?

Could the forum users please give me some feedback on this topic – or maybe tell which wow factors they have used/implemented - if any?
