Partner access to root site homepage?

Hi,

We have some partner staff set up with access to select sites on our intranet. I set up custom permissions on the root site's homepage to grant a partners group access to it, and and have enabled audience trimming on the root site's homepage web parts so that only the few we want to show up for partners appears.

The problem is that partners group gets Access Denied when trying to log in. If change users when already on the homepage to my test partner user, all works fine. However, if I then click on the main logo link, or if I try to go to just the base URL (without the "/Pages/home.aspx" added onto it), then access is denied.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

:)Ben

ps, I tried applying the same workaround I used to make audience trimmed web parts stop showing access denied messages in the body of the page (link below), basically using a custom permission level with solely "Open" privileges at the site level, but am still getting the same access denied message.
