Question about extending web applications in SharePoint 2010

Hi folks,

I'm a SharePoint 2010 newbie trying to learn how to extend web applications on my own (with the help of various tutorials/blogs). For my exercise, I wanted to extend my default web app so I can view it on the internet, without any success. I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2.

Here's what I did after extending my web app:

1. Added a new DNS (A) Host entry for the new internet web address,

2. Added new binding for the web address in IIS,

3. Added firewall exception for the new port created when I extended the app.

From what I understood, these should've been enough for me to view the web site, but that wasn't the case. Am I missing something?

Also, I have the ff. questions:

1. Ports used in extending web apps - should this be the same as the default's port?

2. When testing extended web apps, is it really necessary to view them in a separate machine? Is it possible to view them in same machine where the server is located? I've read a couple of articles about disabling loopback check, but according to some of them this method is not recommended.

Thanks so much in advance for replying. I'm trying to learn everything I can, so any sort of constructive feedback would be hugely appreciated. :)
