Hi,
I cannot seem to figure this one out, to even see if this is possible.
We have a document library with Read Only permissions applied to approx 600 users, and editing permissions applied to a few users.
This library contains our Company files. These are all files that are added for staff to access and fill out with some details depending on what the document is. Lets assume we are trying to type details into a Holiday/Leave Form. Typically this document would just be filled in, then printed out and handed to the appropriate manager for submission.
The issue we are having is, for the Word Documents, the staff are getting the error "This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked". I presume this is normal operation, as they have Read Only permissions to the file that they have opened. We have been working around this by saving the file to the desktop and editing from there, but this is no longer an option.
To complicate the matter though, all of the Excel documents will happily allow them to enter data in to them. So, if we provided an Excel version of the Holiday/Leave form, they can fill it out and print it, even though they have Read Only permissions on the file.
What i need is, for Word to act the same way as Excel. I need them to be able to enter data into the file, but not be able to Save the document back to the Library. I cannot give them edit permissions to this library because of Regulation and ISO requirments.
- Is this at all possible?
- Is Excel functioning correctly? if so, then why does Word not allow this?
- Am i missing something trivial?
- Server 2008R2, SharePoint 2010 Foundation
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
(if this should be in a different forum, then please let me know)
