How do I export custom master page created within SharePoint Designer across different farm urls?

Hi,

I have created a custom master page and page layouts within SharePoint Designer for my development site. I now need to deploy these to my production site but a simple upload of these into "Master pages and page layouts" flags errors? I presume this is down to the site specific markup that SharePoint Designer creates, how do I get around this?
