Sharepoint as RDBMS

Hi,

Does any one used Sharepoint Lists as RDBMS. Means, using Sharepoint lists to act as tables and use them.

Does this improve capability than using SQL Server tables and scale up the application?

The reason why am asking this question is, we had an proposal for using Sharepoint lists for storing transaction data.
