Receiving an error when trying to Check Out an Excel Document

Hello,

There is an Excel Document on a SharePoint library and whenever (and whoever) tries to check out the document for editing, an error message gets displayed.

If you try to check out the document via SharePoint, then the error message reads "The file [file name] is not checked out.  This document could not be checked out.  You may not have permission to check out the document or it is already checked out or locked for editing by another user."

If you open the document from SharePoint (Read-only mode) and then try to check it out from Excel, I get an error message saying "Cannot perform this operation.  The file has been deleted or someone else has it checked out."

I'm not sure what the issue is here.  There are other excel documents in the SAME library which open without a problem.  Also, I'm not sure if it has to do with anything, but versioning is turned ON in this library. The other excel documents only have around 2 or 3 versions of each.  The version that cannot be checked out has well over 200+ versions.  Again, I'm not sure if this could be a problem - I was just throwing that out there.

One last thing - It was working just fine until this morning.  A user checked out the document, made changes, checked it backed in and when he noticed that the version didn't change, he tried to open the document back up and that's when the user received the error.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

Kyle
