Error when editing document properties: 'Failed to get value of the "[...]" column from the "Managed Metadata" field type control. Exception message: Invalid field name...'

The error shows when trying to edit properties for a document. I have seen others having the same issue, but in most cases it seems that this has been related to coded solutions. In my case this is pure config done through the web interface.

I have a site collection with three subsites that each have a document library with the same three content types. The content types are defined at site collection level as are the site columns, many of which are of type managed metadata. In two of three document libraries I am not having any difficulties adding new documents and applying document properties, but in the third library I get the error:

Failed to get value of the "[...]" column from the "Managed Metadata" field type control.  See details in log. Exception message: Invalid field name. {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

The strangest thing is that everything worked perfectly last week, and I can't see that anything has changed other than a couple of documents being added and tagged in the troubled library.

I have tried creating a new library in the same site as the troubled library and adding the same content types to it without having the same problems. I thus have a way of working around the problem, but that doesn't help me understand what the problem is and why it's happened. I don't like problems that appear for no apparent reason, so I am hoping someone can shed som light on this for me.

Once again: this is not a coded solution - just plain configuration.

Henning
