Documents can be opened for editing twice, then read-only after that.

Hi, I am working on a SharePoint Server 2010 environment with IE9 (with SharePoint Open Docs class enabled). I have just upgraded from Office 2010 to 2013, although some elements of 2010 remain.

In a site where I am site collection administrator I have a number of libraries with a number of word documents in each. If I click the document name I get the open read-only or edit dialog and the document can be opened for editing. The second time I click on a document I also get the read-only or edit dialog. However, from then on clicking any document name brings up the open or save dialog and the document will only open read-only. It doesn't matter which libraries I'm in, and whether the 2 initial documents are in the same or different libraries. Also, if I close IE after opening more than 2 documents and then reopen IE I can now open 2 more documents in edit mode before the open or save dialog appears again.

Can anyone shed any light on this inconsistent behaviour?

Related question - Can a document listed in the Related Content column of a task be opened from that link in edit mode, or will it only ever open in read-only mode?

Thanks

Nick
