How to avoid conflicts with users working on the same document in SharePoint 2010?

I like to use the SharePoint 2010 workflows, but wondering how to handle multiple users opening and saving changes to the document that is in workflow. How can I configure SharePoint to handle conflicts of people working on the same document during a workflow?
