Searching for .msg files

At our company we aren't allowed to store email in Sharepoint.  That wouldn't be that hard to just block all .msg files, but unfortunately some crazy engineer in the past created some custom application that saves it's files as .msg, and those have to be stored in Sharepoint.

So now Legal wants me to search through the system and give them a report of all .msg files so that they can look at the names to see if they might be email related or not.  Then engineering files tend to have a distinct name, (8.3 which makes it easier), so it will be pretty easy to spot the email files.

I tried just doing a regular search which works fine, (1880 files found), but it's exporting that to a list I can give to Legal that is a problem.  I don't know of anyway to take a search results window, (page 1 of 180), and save the whole results to a excel file or something.

I assume that there is a way to do this with Powershell, but I can't figure that out.  I'm not a PS guru by any stretch, and after doing a bunch of googling I just can't figure out the syntax to find the files, let alone dump them into a list.  I figure if I just display them on the screen 1880 will fill up the buffer pretty quick.

If anyone knows of any way I could do this I'd greatly appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks.

Ted
