Error linking inside an Excel document

Greetings, everyone.

I've been using SP2010 to work with people abroad. I'll describe the situation the best I can.

Suppose that my site is http://abc123.com

In some folder, we have an Excel file in which we all participate. This Excel fill contains hyperlinks to .pdf files that are hosted in a different folder, still inside our SP2010 site.

The way and order in which we link Excel cells to .pdf files is:

  • User1 checks out the Excel file.
  • User1 copies the path to the .pdf file by right-clicking the file in Sharepoint and clicking "copy shortcut".
  • User1 right-clicks the cell they want to link and click "Hyperlink"
  • User1 makes sure that "Existing File or web page" is selected, and then pastes the shortcut that was copied from the .pdf file in our Sharepoint page in the "Address" field.
  • User1 clicks OK.
  • Then, when User1 finishes using the document, they check it back in.

Now, suppose our .pdf file is located in http://abc123.com/folder1/file1.pdf, and it works like a charm when User1 linked it for the first time.

The problem comes when User2 tries to use the Excel document.

When User2 checks out the Excel document, and tries to click on the link that User1 created to check the .pdf file contents, the path has changed to something to this extent: file:///C:\\Users\User1\Documents\Sharepoint Drafts\abc123.com\folder1\file1.pdf, as if it were trying to look into User1's PC for the file. Obviously User2 gets an error message and can't see the file.

If either of them tries to edit the hyperlink in the Excel file, it works as long as they don't check the Excel file back in. When they do, the same thing happens over and over.

Does anybody have a clue as to why this might be happening? Thanks in advance.
